Learn more about Auvik’s NetFlow traffic analysis

What is advanced flow analysis, and why does it matter?

Advanced flow analysis examines network traffic patterns to show you exactly what applications and devices are consuming bandwidth in real-time. It matters because you can’t fix bandwidth problems or detect shadow IT if you can’t see what’s actually happening on your network.

What flow protocols does Auvik TrafficInsights support?

Auvik TrafficInsights supports NetFlow v5/v9, J-Flow, IPFIX, and sFlow protocols. This means you can analyze traffic from virtually any enterprise network device, regardless of vendor.

Can Auvik identify applications in encrypted traffic?

Yes, our machine learning algorithms identify applications even when traffic is encrypted by analyzing flow patterns and metadata. You’ll know if someone’s using Dropbox, Netflix, or unauthorized cloud apps without decrypting a single packet.

What’s the difference between flow analysis and packet capture?

Flow analysis examines traffic metadata (who’s talking to whom, how much, and when) while packet capture inspects actual data content. Think of it this way: flow analysis tells you about the conversation patterns without listening to what’s being said.

Do I need to configure anything on my network devices to enable flow monitoring?

You’ll need to enable flow export on your network devices and point them to your Auvik collector. It’s typically a few simple commands, and our support team can guide you through the setup.

Does Auvik require hardware probes or additional equipment for flow analysis?

No hardware is necessary. All you need is our lightweight software collector that runs on your existing infrastructure. It receives and processes flow data from your network devices without any special equipment.

How long does Auvik retain flow data for historical analysis?

Auvik stores flow data for 14 days, giving you enough history to investigate past incidents and identify recurring patterns. For longer-term trending, device statistics are retained for months or years, depending on your subscription.

How does TrafficInsights integrate with the rest of Auvik’s network management platform?

TrafficInsights data appears directly on your network maps and device dashboards, correlating traffic patterns with device health and alerts. When you spot a bandwidth issue in TrafficInsights, you can immediately jump to the problem device and take action.
